The ongoing All-Africa Games in Ghana is the 13th edition of the competition. The Games kicked off in Accra, on Friday, March 8th and will conclude on Saturday, March 23rd.
As it stands, Egypt has an unassailable lead on the medals table, with Nigeria, South Africa., Algeria and Tunisia making the top five.
Here are eight other things to know about the All-Africa Games.
1. Over 5,000 athletes and coaches from 55 African countries are participating.
2. There are 29 selected sports disciplines in the Games.
3. The 13th edition of the African Games in Ghana will be used as an official qualifier for the Olympic Games, Paris 2024. The sports include athletics, cycling, table tennis, badminton, tennis, swimming, triathlon, and wrestling.
4. Host country Ghana says its main aim of hosting the 13th edition is to “use sport to achieve national and continental development goals and contribute to Ghana’s transformational agenda and the African Union Agenda 2063: “Africa We Want.”
5. Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, Algeria and Tunisia, in that order, are the top five countries in all time gold medals table of the African Games.
6. The African Games was designed to promote high performing African Sports Elite and enhance sporting and cultural exchanges between Member States of the African Union.
7. Ghana won the rights to host the event in October 2018. Nigeria and Burkina Faso also placed bids for hosting rights.
8. The first games were held in Brazzaville, Congo in July 1965.
