The Final 12: Nigeria, Morocco, Defending Champions South Africa, others ready for WAFCON 2024

Nine-time champions Nigeria qualified for the 13th edition of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Tuesday with a 2-1 defeat of hosts Cape Verde, to record a 7-1 aggregate win in the final round of the qualification series.

After Tuesday’s dramatic final round of qualifiers, Nigeria was joined by hosts Morocco and other countries in the final list of participants for the 12-team tournament.

Joining them are defending champions, South Africa, three-time finalists Ghana who make a return to WAFCON after a six-year absence, North African heavyweights Algeria and Tunisia, as well as Mali.

DR Congo, Senegal, Zambia, Tanzania and Botswana complete the list of confirmed qualifiers at the Morocco 2024 finals.

Four-time finalists Cameroon and two-time winners Equatorial Guinea failed to qualify for the tournament.

It would be recalled that the final match of the 2022 WAFCON between Morocco and South Africa set a new record for attendance, with 50,000 fans in attendance. The Banyana Banyana clinched their maiden title with a 2-1 win over the Moroccan ladies.
