Nigerian-born British boxer and former two-time champion Anthony Joshua missed out on the opportunity to become a three-time heavyweight world champion after he was knocked down by British opponent Daniel Dubois in the fifth round at a packed London’s Wembley Stadium on Saturday night.
Joshua, 34, was knocked down four times in the opening four rounds by 27-year-old Dubois, but the former two-time champion beat the count on both occasions.
However, a right hook from the IBF heavyweight champion to Joshua’s chin in the fifth round ended the fight with a knockout for Dubois’ first defence of his world title in front of a record 96,000 fans.
“I’ve just been on a rollercoaster ride. This is my time, this is my redemption story and I’m not going to stop until I reach my full potential,” an elated Duboi said after winning the match.
Joshua might get another chance to redeem himself if he and his promoter Eddie Hearn decide to exercise the rematch clause in the fight contract.
