AFCON 2023: Nigeria to Play Cameroon in Round of 16

The Super Eagles face Indomitable Lions in a heavyweight clash

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on Saturday in the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Cote d’Ivoire 2023.

Cameroon secured second spot in Group C with four points ahead of Guinea on goals scored following a dramatic 3-2 win over Gambia at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on Tuesday.

The five-time AFCON champions came from behind to score two late goals to qualify for the Last 16. Christopher Wooh scored the third goal in the 91st minute, after an own goal by Gambia’s James Gomez had the game tied at 2-2. Earlier, Toko Ekambi (56th minute) and Abile Jallow (72nd minute) had scored for Cameroon and Gambia respectively.

In the other Group C game at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, defending champions Senegal continued their perfect start to the tournament with a feisty 2-0 win over Guinea to finish group leaders with nine points and eight goals scored in three matches.

Second half goals from Abdoulaye Seck and Iliman Ndiaye sealed victory for the Teranga Lions, who will now face a third-placed side from Group A, B or F in the last 16 on Monday.

Senegal are the only side to finish the AFCON 2023 group stage with a 100% record.
