Egypt and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has set a new Champions League record with his brilliant goal in Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Bologna at Anfield on Wednesday.
Following his goal against Bologna, his 45th in the competition, Salah has now overtaken Ivorien and Chelsea legend Didier Drogba as the highest African goalscorer in Champions League history.
The Egyptian forward has now scored one more goal in the competition than Drogba, with 44.
Drogba scored the equalising goal and winning penalty in the 2012 Champions League final to win Chelsea’s first trophy in the competition.
Salah is also the African to score the most goals in Premier League history, with 161 goals in over 250 appearances, which also places him 10th on the all-time list.
Former Barcelona, Inter Milan and Cameroon forward Samuel Eto’o is third on the list of Africa’s top marksmen in the Champions League with 30 goals.
“Honestly, I didn’t know about the record, I just focus on helping the team win. Personal achievements are great, but what matters most is that we keep performing well and getting results,” Salah was quoted as saying after the match at Anfield.
With both Drogba and Eto’o now retired, 32-year-old Salah is set to keep the record for a long time if he maintains his scoring run.
Sadio Mane (27 goals) and Riyad Mahrez (20 goals) complete the top five African highest goalscorers in the Champions League.
However, both cannot add to their tally after switching Europe for the Saudi Pro league.
