BET Awards: African Stars Shine as Tems, Tyla win Big
African music stars shone brightest on Sunday at the BET Awards 2024, with Nigeria’s Tems, South African artistes Tyla and Makhadzi winning big at the star-studded event to celebrate Black creativity and excellence across music, television and sports.
Tems continued her global streak of awards as she won the “Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award” for her soul-uplifting track “Me & U”.
South African music star, Tyla, was a double winner on the night as she clinched both awards in the international categories, for the “Best International Act” and “Best New Artist.”
Another South African artiste, Makhadzi, also won the award for the “Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act.”
At the awards ceremony, Will Smith performed for the first time ever on the BET Awards and unveiled his new song “You Can Make It”, with an energetic performance alongside Kirk Franklin, Chandler Moore, and the Sunday Service Choir.
US music star, Usher, was honoured with this year’s Lifetime Achievement BET Award, in recognition of his impact as a songwriter, performer, and record producer in over three decades as an artiste.
A host of artistes also paid tribute to Usher with a captivating music performance.
