Burna Boy, Rema, Tems miss out as Tyla Wins Best African Act, Best Afrobeats at MTV EMAs
In her first-ever nominations, South African singer Tyla won big at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) on Sunday, picking up three awards at the ceremony which held in Manchester, England on Sunday.
Tyla, who was nominated in four categories, won three of them: Best Afrobeats, Best R&B and Best African act. The South African music star beat other African nominees including Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Rema, others.
While Ayra Starr was nominated for “Best New”, “Best Afrobeats”, “Best African Act”, and “Best Push”, Burna Boy, Rema, Asake, and Tems were nominees in the “Best Afrobeats” category; with Asake, Diamond Platnumz, DBN Gogo, TitoM & Yuppe nominated in the “Best African Act” category.
American artiste Taylor Swift was the big winner at Sunday’s MTV EMAs, with four awards in total out of seven nominations, the highest at this year’s edition.
Swift won Best Artist, Best Video for her collaboration with Post Malone “Fortnight”, as well as Best Live and Best U.S. act.
The US pop star thanked fans via a video message, as she is currently on tour in North America.
Also, US rapper Busta Rhymes, who produced a masterful performance of a medley of his hits, received the global icon award, while the pop pioneer award went to British electro-pop duo Pet Shop Boys.
