Egypt win 13th African Games, Nigeria, South Africa finish in Top 3

Egypt claim title with record-breaking 102 gold medals

For the third time in a row in the continental games, Egypt finished in the top spot of the medals table of the 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana, with a record-breaking 102 gold medals to emerge as the top nation in the competition.

It is also the fourth time in the last five editions of the All-Africa Games that Egypt have emerged top of the medals table, South Africa broke their winning streak when it won the Games in Maputo in 2011.

However, since 2015, Egypt has topped the total medals table in the last three editions of the African Games.

With a total of 191 medals – 102 gold, 47 silver and 42 bronze, Egypt finished ahead of Nigeria and South Africa in the top three nations of this year’s edition of the African Games in Accra, which ended on Saturday.

Nigeria emerged second with 121 medals – 47 gold, 34 silver and 40 bronze, while South Africa finished third with 106 medals – 32 gold, 32 silver and 42 bronze.

Interestingly, Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa in that order are the top three nations in the overall medals tally of the African Games since it began in 1965.

Thirty-five countries won medals in this edition of the continental games which held between March 8 and March 23 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, as well as the Games Village and other ancillary Facilities in Accra, Ghana.
