Morocco’s Atlas Lions remain the top African men’s football team after gaining one place in the latest FIFA world rankings released on Thursday.
According to the FIFA world ranking, Lionel Messi’s Argentina are still the best men’s football team in the world, followed by France, Belgium, Brazil and England respectively.
They are followed by Portugal, Netherlands, Spain, Croatia and Italy to complete the top 10 teams.
The latest FIFA world ranking listed the Atlas Lions of Morocco, historic African semi-finalists at the 2022 World Cup, as the 12th-best football team worldwide, while 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finalists, Nigeria’s Super Eagles, are in 38th position.
Senegal, listed 18th, are the only other African team in the top 20 of the FIFA men’s world ranking.
Egypt gained one place as the 36th ranked team in the world, while current AFCON champions Cote d’Ivoire gained one spot in 37th position, followed by Nigeria, which dropped eight places in the 38th position.
Tunisia (41st), Algeria (44th) and Mali (50th) are the other African teams ranked among the top 50 worldwide. Ghana, up four places, is listed in the 64th position.
Although Liberia is listed in the 142nd position in the world, they have gained the most ground over the period after gaining 10 places, with the Lone Stars still unbeaten in 2024.
