The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which will take place in Morocco will now hold between December 21, 2025 and January 18, 2026.
This was announced by the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Friday.
This is the first time the AFCON would be held during this time of the year – over the Christmas and New Year period.
Morocco will be hosting Africa’s premier football competition for the second time in their history.
Similarly, the CAF ExCo announced that the 2025 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), also to be hosted in Morocco, will hold between July 5 – 26, 2025.
According to the CAF President, Patrick Motsepe, the news dates for the AFCON 2025 took much longer than expected, due to complex discussions with various interested parties, in the light of the extensive International and domestic match calendars.
“CAF is committed to protecting and advancing the interests of African players, playing in football clubs in Europe and worldwide. CAF is also committed to building mutually beneficial relationships with the ECA, UEFA, other football confederations and FIFA. We will continue to make significant progress in developing and ensuring that African Football is globally competitive and amongst the best in the World,” he stated.
Motsepe expressed confidence that the AFCON edition in Morocco 2025 “will be extremely successful and will be the best AFCON in the history of this competition.”
The 34th edition of AFCON, which was hosted by Cote d’Ivoire between January 13 and February 11, 2024, has been hailed by many analysts as arguably the best edition so far.
Hosts Cote d’Ivoire were crowned champions following a 2-1 win over the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
