President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, is seeking for a fourth term as the country’s president after 24 years in office.
Voting have begun in the country’s presidential and legislative elections, which are likely to extend Kagame’s tenure for another five years.
Analysts are of the view that Kagame, who became Rwanda’s president in 2000, has dominated every election since then with over 90 per cent of the vote. He has held sway as Rwandan leader since 1994, when his rebel forces took power at the end of the 1994 genocide in the country.
The 66-year-old will face off against the only two contenders who were approved out of eight applicants to run by the state-run electoral commission. The candidates are Frank Habineza, leader of Rwanda’s Democratic Green Party, and independent Philippe Mpayimana.
