Nigerian musci stars lead the list with 10 nominations for the 66th Grammy Awards

The nominations for the 2024 Grammy Awards – officially known as the 66th Grammy Awards – were officially revealed on Friday by the Recording Academy, with Nigerians dominating the list of African music stars nominated for the coveted awards which will take place Sunday, February 4, at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, US.

Overall, American singer and songwriter SZA is the most-nominated artist at the 2024 Grammys, with nine nominations.

Meanwhile, the number of African nominations underscored the rising influence of Afrobeats music on the global stage. Nigerian artistes bagged a total of 10 nominations, with Burna Boy and Davido leading with four and three nominations respectively. Asake, Ayra Starr, Olamide, as well as South Africa’s Musa Keys, Tyla and Trevor Noah completed the African playlist.

Nigeria’s Fireboy and Ghana’s Amaaree also got nominations in the Album of the Year category. While Fireboy Featured on Jon Batiste’s World Music Radio, Amaarae featured on Janelle Monae’s The Age of Promise

South African Trevor Noah was nominated in the Best Comedy Album for his “I Wish You Would’ album.

A bonus on the African grammy nominees playlist is Nigerian-born American Blessing Offor, who was nominated in two categories: the Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song category for his song, Believe; and Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for his album, My Tribe.

Similarly, Tems (Temilade Openiyi) also featured as a songwriter in “Lift Me Up” (From “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Music From And Inspired By”) – Ryan Coogler, Ludwig Göransson, Robyn Fenty & Temilade Openiyi, songwriters (Rihanna), which was nominated in the Best Song Written For Visual Media category.

Three new Grammy categories will debut at the 2024 Grammys. They are the Best African Music Performance, Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording.

It would be a battle of African giants in the Best African Music Performance category, with Burna Boy, Davido featuring Musa Keys, Asake, Olamide, Ayra Starr and Tyla all slugging it out for the coveted Grammy award plaque.

Burna Boy, Wizkid and Tems have all won the Grammy Awards in recent years.
