Track Kings & Queens: Nigeria dominate Athletics in 13th African Games

With a total of 22 medals – 11 gold, six silver and five bronze, Nigeria are the leaders of the athletics medals standing at the 13th All-Africa Games in Accra, Ghana, which ends on Saturday.

Nigerian female athletes won six of the country’s 11 gold medals; with world record holder in the 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, and long jumper Efe Brume, among the gold medallists at the African games.

Amusan won her third consecutive African Games women’s 100m hurdles title (having won in the 2015 and 2019 editions), and also led the Nigerian female quartet to win gold in the women’s 4x100m relay.

Brume won the gold medal in the women’s long jump with a 6.92 metres leap in her first attempt to secure her second consecutive African Games title, following her win at the same event at the 2019 edition in Rabat, Morocco.

The Nigerian women’s 4x400m quartet of Esther Elo Joseph, Patience Okon-George, Brittany Ogunmokun and Omolara Omotosho-Ogunmakinju also won gold.

In the mixed 4×400 metres relay, the quartet of Emmanuel Ojeli, Patience Okon-George, Adeyemi Sikiru and Omolara Ogunmakinju won gold and set a new African record with a time of 3:13.26.

The quartet of Sunday Israel Okon, Consider Ekanem, Alaba Akintola and Usheoritse Itsekiri also clinched gold in the men’s 4x100m relay.

Similarly, Chidi Okezie made history with his gold medal win in the men’s 400m as he became the first Nigerian man to win the title since Innocent Egbunike 37-years ago in 1987.

Ethiopia, with seven gold, seven silver, and four bronze medals, are second, while South Africa are third on the athletics medals standing with seven gold, one silver and 3 bronze medals.

Kenya, with six gold, six silver, and eight bronze, are fourth on the table; and host Ghana are fifth with three gold, two silver and one bronze medals.

Algeria, Gambia, Morocco, Cameroon, and Egypt complete the top 10 on the Athletics medals standing.

However, Egypt still lead the overall medals table, with Nigeria and South Africa second and third respectively.
