Former US President, Barack Obama has officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic nominee for the US Presidential election in November.
Obama’s endorsement comes five days after US President Joe Biden had ended his election campaign for a second term and endorsed Harris to succeed him as the Democratic Party candidate.
“I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden had said in his announcement.
In a post on his official X account on Friday, Obama wrote, “Earlier this week, Michelle and I called our friend @KamalaHarris. We told her we think she’ll make a fantastic President of the United States, and that she has our full support. At this critical moment for our country, we’re going to do everything we can to make sure she wins in November. We hope you’ll join us.”
The post was accompanied with video showing an elated VP Harris walking as she received a phone call from the Obama.
“Hi. You’re both together! Oh, it’s good to hear you both!” Harris exclaimed.
“Hey there. I can’t have this phone call without saying to my girl, Kamala: I am proud of you. This is going to be historic,” former US First Lady, Michelle, said during the call.
“We called to say Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and to do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office,” former President Obama added in the video.
“This means so much to me. The words you have spoken and the friendship that you have given me over all these years means more than I can express,” Harris replied.
The Obamas join leading US Democrats, majority of them in Congress and several of the country’s Democratic governors who have also endorsed Harris. They include Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries.
Harris made history on January 20, 2021, when she became the first woman, first Black American, and the first South Asian American to be elected as Vice President.
The US vice president has started her campaign to become president by using the song, Freedom, by US music star Beyonce as her campaign song in a video.
Harris used “Freedom”, a cut from Beyonce’s 2016 hit album, Lemonade, during her first official public appearance as a presidential candidate at her campaign headquarters in Delaware and during her rally in Milwaukee, on Monday and Tuesday respectively.
Judging by the massive support she has received from all key Democrats, VP Harris is poised to be officially nominated by the Democratic Party, which will hold its National Convention in August.
If she defeats Republican candidate and former president Donald Trump in the November election, she will become the first female president of the United States.
