Super Eagles' 2026 World Cup hope in the balance following 2-1 defeat

The Super Eagles of Nigeria fell to a shock 2-1 defeat against Benin Republic in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup African Qualifiers played at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire, on Monday evening.

Raphael Onyedika scored in the 29th minute with a fine shot to the right corner of the post.

Benin equalised in the 37th minute Jodel Dossou of Benin took advantage of poor defending at the Super Eagles far post to score with a well-taken shot.

Striker Steve Mounie made it 2-1 to the Cheetahs of Benin when he scored from a corner three minutes into added time of the first half.

The Super Eagles huffed and puffed in the second half but could not find another goal.

After four matches, Nigeria remains at fifth place on the Group C table with three points, one point ahead of bottom placed Zimbabwe, while Benin Republic are temporarily surprise leaders with seven points.
